Premier League guide
How the Premier League table works.
Points decide the race, but goal difference and other ranking rules matter when clubs finish level. Here is how every part of the table fits together.
Quick answer
How does the Premier League table work?
The 20 clubs are ranked by points earned across 38 matches. A win is worth three points, a draw one and a defeat zero. If clubs are level on points, goal difference is the first tiebreaker, then goals scored. The club in first after the completed season is champion; the bottom three are relegated.
Open the Premier League live hubWhat the table represents
The Premier League table is a season-long ranking of all 20 clubs. Every club plays 38 matches: one home match and one away match against each of the other 19 teams. The table turns those results into an order from first to twentieth.
Position is not decided by reputation, possession or chances created. It is decided by the competition's ranking rules, beginning with points earned from completed league matches.
The Premier League points system
A club's points total is the sum of all wins and draws. For example, 20 wins, 8 draws and 10 defeats produce 68 points: 60 from the wins and 8 from the draws. A draw contributes less than a win, but it can still influence the title race, European places or relegation battle.
Premier League tiebreakers, in order
When two or more clubs have the same points total, the first separator is goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded.
Goals scored − goals conceded = goal difference
If a club scores 70 and concedes 40, its goal difference is +30. A higher goal difference ranks above a lower one when points are equal.
- 1. Goal difference
- 2. Goals scored
- 3. Points in head-to-head league matches
- 4. Away goals in those head-to-head matches
- 5. A neutral-venue playoff, when the relevant positions must be separated
How to read a Premier League table

- L
- Matches lost.
- GF
- Goals scored by the club.
- GA
- Goals conceded by the club.
- GD
- Goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded.
- PTS

Why the final positions matter
The club in first place after all scheduled league matches is the Premier League champion. Places near the top can qualify clubs for UEFA competitions, while the bottom three clubs are relegated to the EFL Championship.
The exact distribution of European places can vary because it depends on UEFA access rules, domestic cup winners and the performance-based allocation for that season. A coloured table line is therefore a current indicator, not a substitute for the official final allocation.
Why a live table changes during a match
A live table provisionally applies the score in each match. A goal can turn a draw into a win, adding two provisional points to one club and removing one from the other. It also changes goal difference, so several positions can move after a single goal.
The table is not final until results are confirmed. Postponed fixtures can also leave clubs with different numbers of matches played, so position alone may not tell the full story during the season.
A simple example
| Club | P | GF | GA | GD | PTS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Club A | 38 | 72 | 40 | +32 | 70 |
| Club B | 38 | 68 | 41 | +27 | 70 |
Both clubs have 70 points, but Club A ranks higher because its +32 goal difference is better than Club B's +27. The clubs and figures are illustrative, not a real season table.
Common questions about the table
How are points awarded in the Premier League?
A win earns three points, a draw earns one point and a defeat earns no points. A club's total across its completed league matches determines its position before any tiebreaker is applied.
What happens if Premier League teams finish level on points?
Goal difference separates them first, followed by goals scored. If the teams still cannot be separated and a decisive position is involved, the competition applies its head-to-head and, if necessary, playoff rules.
Why do Premier League positions change during live matches?
Live tables provisionally apply the current score. One goal can change the points earned and goal difference for both teams, so several positions can move before the result is final.
How many matches does each Premier League club play?
Each of the 20 clubs plays 38 league matches: one at home and one away against each of the other 19 clubs.
The short version
- A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none.
- Points determine the table order first.
- Goal difference separates teams level on points.
- Goals scored is considered if goal difference is also equal.
- The final table determines the champion, relegation and the basis for qualification places.
